Mariners

Our Values

At Mariners, we DO a lot of stuff. We have a lot going on! It’s all good. But perhaps it is helpful to ask WHY we do what we do – what is our motivation? This is where our values come in. We value a lot of things (below) that help explain why we do what we do:

  • GRACE…that saves.  ‘For it is by grace you have been saved through faith’ (Ephesians 2:8).  God’s grace (His empowering presence) saves us from slavery to sin and selfishness
  • NEW LIFE…that comes through a second birth.  Jesus said we can neither see nor enter the Kingdom of God (His world) unless we are ‘born again’.  As we are born physically, so we must be born again (or reborn) spiritually, so that we are spiritually alive instead of dead.  In this way, we become fully alive.  God brings about our new birth by the Holy Spirit when we ask Him to.  Then, we can enjoy ‘life to the full’ as Jesus described (John 10:10)
  • LOVE…that is unconditional and sacrificial.  We seek to mirror God’s love which, as well as being unconditional and sacrificial, is also perfect and unending (1 Corinthians 13:8).  Jesus said “A new command I give you: love one another” (John 13:34)
  • HOLINESS…that involves a life lived fully surrendered to God.  God’s No 1 attribute is holiness and we are called to be holy, as He is holy.  Holiness also embraces purity, passion, goodness and truth.
  • IDENTITY…that is changed from orphans to sons and daughters.  We are sons and daughters of the King of kings when we surrender our lives to Jesus.  We have a new found security and authority as members of the ultimate royal household!
  • PRESENCE… that enables us regularly to experience God.  It is not enough merely to know about Him; we long for His intimate presence because ‘one touch from the King can change everything’.  So, we seek Him through prayer, through worship and by meditating on His word (the Bible).
  • COURAGE…that embraces the challenge to change.  As God exposes our shortcomings, we want to seek his best, both personally and corporately
  • TRANSFORMATION…that leads to a renewed and exciting life.  If we allow Him, the Holy Spirit transforms our thinking, speech and actions, helping us enjoy rewarding, fulfilling, God-centred lives.
  • FREEDOM…that results from God’s renewing work.  We want to experience the freedom that only God can give – from addiction, sickness, destructive relationships, oppression in its many forms, etc
  • FAITH…that moves mountains.  We want to represent (or re-present) Jesus to our community and city, exercising genuine faith that involves risk (Matthew 21:21)
  • HOPE…that is certain.  God has promised us much that we can be sure about.  We have a secure (and eternal) future
  • JOY…that gives strength.  The joy of the Lord is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10)
  • PEACE…that surpasses our understanding.  God exchanges our fears and anxieties for His peace, which is unlike any peace the world can offer (John14:27).  We choose to live out of His peace and rest, not anxiety and stress
  • INTEGRITY…that requires consistency in our private and public lives.  Whether at home behind closed doors or out in public (at work, in the neighbourhood or at church), we want to be recognisably the same Godly person
  • HUMILITY…that recognises our own shortcomings.  It’s only as God saves us that we can be someone special and it is only as He partners with us that we can achieve something worthwhile
  • EXCELLENCE…that demands our very best.  We do not require perfection, but we try to do things very well because it matters
  • FORGIVENESS…that we extend to those who have wronged us.  After all, God has readily shown mercy to us and forgiven us all our wrongdoing
  • KINDNESS…that welcomes and accepts anyone.  It’s ‘the kindness of God that leads to repentance’ (Romans 2:4), and we aim to reflect our Father’s kindness.  We want everyone to find love and life, hope and healing in our church family
  • FAMILY…that sticks together through good and bad times.  As a church, we are a family far more than an organisation.  God calls us into His family as His adopted children.  We are therefore brothers and sisters.  We aim to promote and support biological families as well as our church family
  • COMPASSION…that identifies with others’ suffering and helps relieve it.  Jesus had compassion on the sick (Matthew 14:14), the grieving (Luke 7:13,14) and those without spiritual leadership (Matthew 9:36)
  • GENEROSITY…that gives sacrificially.  A lifestyle of generosity changes lives and brings revival, so we give freely of our time, talents and treasure
  • UNITY…that commands a blessing.  We want to do all we can to foster unity (not uniformity) by speaking well of, praying for and supporting fellow Christians – whether they are in Mariners itself or in other churches.  God blesses unity (Psalm 133:1,3)
  • HONOUR…that releases life.  We want to honour everyone (whether or not they agree with us) in all we say and do. Honour releases life (Ephesians 6:2,3), and we want to release life wherever we go

That may sound like a lot of things we value – and it is!  We won’t always match up but, nevertheless, we will continue to value these things and be shaped by them. In fact, they are simply the values of God’s world, His Kingdom where He rules and reigns – and we want to reflect those same values here at Mariners.
