Read the Bible

The Bible is the most translated, most published, most read and most purchased book ever – and by a huge margin over its nearest rival!  Wikipedia say that 5-6 billion have been sold!  Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan comes 2nd (although there is no published figure).  Chairman Mao’s Little Red Book has sold 1 billion – but there are over a billion Chinese people!

There is a reason why the Bible has sold so well.  God Himself caused it to be written for our benefit and He still speaks to us through it today.  In one place the Bible says, “For the Word of God is full of living power.  It is sharper than the sharpest knife, cutting deep into our innermost thoughts and desires”.

If you don’t already have a modern translation of the Bible, we recommend that you buy one.  It would also be really helpful if it had footnotes that will help you find your way round it and explain parts that are not immediately clear.   We recommend one from the ‘Life Application Bible’ series, either in the New Living Translation (green cover) or the New International Version (red cover).  You can buy one from ‘Christian Bits‘ at the following link:

We recommend you also obtain some Bible reading notes, to help you navigate around what is a big (and perhaps unfamiliar!) book. You can obtain free Bible Reading notes from United Christian Broadcasters (UCB) at the following link:

Join a lively church

Being an effective Christian on your own is as unlikely as a hot coal staying hot when it is taken out of the fire and put on the hearth.  You need to join a lively church where you can worship God, hear God speak to you through dynamic teaching and where you can encourage and be encouraged by other Christians

You might like to join us at Mariners, where you will be most welcome.  But equally, you could go to another lively church closer to where you live. It matters less which church – the important thing is that you are connected to other Christians somewhere.

Do an Alpha course

The course is specifically designed to help you explore the Christian faith in more depth.  It is run in a relaxed way around good food, stimulating talks and small group discussion.  As a guest, you help set the agenda.  You are free to ask questions about all aspects of life and faith.

If you would like to know when we are next running an Alpha course, please Contact Us.
